Beautiful music

Is it wrong to be just a little bit annoyed at these rampaging Boston Celtics for their casual cruise through the final two-thirds of the regular season?
I mean, after devastating the favored Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semis before taking Game 1 from Orlando Sunday, you, me, LeBron, LeBron's mom and future stepdad Delonte, and the entire Van Gundy clan now possess enough evidence to make a case that they were capable of considerably greater things than 50 victories and the fourth seed.
(Re-reads previous paragraphs, slaps extra-thick forehead.)
Ah, who am I kidding? While it's insulting to a basketball fan's senses that Rasheed Wallace glided hazily through the regular season while making enough coin to purchase Flyers hats for everyone he's ever met, he and his teammates brought their Sunday best versus the Magic, continuing their postseason trend of playing at their peak when the stakes are highest.
It goes without saying that it has been an absolute treat to watch. But we like to say it anyway.
These Celtics told us they'd turn it on when they had to, and damned if they haven't done just that. Maybe you wish they'd stepped a bit harder on the accelerator during some of the miles along the way during this "Drive to 18," if only to save you 2 1/2-hours of aggravation during one of those nights when they're barely engaged and allow the likes of the New Jersey Nets to believe they're an actual NBA team.
But there's no way around it -- the way the Celtics are playing right now entirely justifies the means, and while we're not counting their Eastern Conference titles before they've hatched, their destination and destiny could very well be another showdown with the Lakers in the NBA Finals. No one around here is going to complain should another chapter in that rivalry soon be written.
Besides -- and I suppose this point is so relevant to their current supreme state that I should have acknowledged it sooner -- who's to say that they'd be in this position had they exerted maximum effort and resources to win Games 1-82 (or 28-82, we should say, given their stellar 23-5 start).
Doc Rivers, whose numerous attributes as a coach include an uncommon knack for ignoring the temptation of short-term fixes during tumultuous times and maintaining focus on the big picture, wisely parsed the minutes of his crucial veterans even if it cost them a W or two along the way. It's hard to imagine Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett would be playing so well -- and playing so much younger than their years -- had Doc not been so relatively prudent with their court time.
Of course, the fun isn't only in the results. It's in watching the players who have made them happen. So before we go, here, in no particular order, are some quick some longer than expected comments on a few of the crucial figures in this resurgence.
'Sheed: It's not the greatest reflection of his character that he could be so apathetic during the regular season, heaving 3s from downtown 'Toineville and undoubtedly driving Tom Thibodeau to the fringe of felonious assault with this lethargic what-you-expect-me-to-move? defensive rotations. As my man Chris Gasper pointed out, at least he was honest. He came here for the playoffs, he's showed up for the playoffs . . . and on Sunday, he was extremely fun to watch, whether he was launching a picturesque rainbow 3-ball from the corner or messing with Dwight Howard when Kendrick Perkins caught a breather.
Kevin Garnett: You realize what's happening with him right now is pretty much a basketball miracle, right? A soon-to-be-34-year-old veteran of 15 NBA seasons -- a player who has logged nearly 45,000 minutes in his career -- struggles through the season a year after suffering an unusual and complicated knee injury. His leaping ability and lateral quickness seem gone for good. Oh, he's still a quality player, but his days of changing games on both ends of the floor seem to be past. And then, all of a sudden, he's KG again. The knee feels better -- he actually got better while playing during the season, and think about that for a moment -- and he uncommon quickness for such a tall man somehow returns. I still don't know how this happened, especially since reports of a sore foot and ankle against Cleveland struck my cynical self as code for "his knee is acting up again." But I'm not going wonder why or how, and instead enjoy the now, because this much I know: I was pretty sure we'd never see this version of Kevin Garnett again.
G2_1227985-094.jpgKendrick Perkins: He does the dirty work while the Big Four (yeah, it's official) gets the glory, and, unusually for a player so young, he actually seems to prefer it that way. Watching him irritate, frustrate, and expose Dwight Howard in Game 1, I can't help but admire him the way my old man did Paul Silas.
Paul Pierce: I suspect once the season comes to an end we're going to hear about a Web MD's worth of injuries that Pierce fought through this season. So it was encouraging to see him look like his usual self, playing his signature shrewd offensive game of balance, fakes, and angles, during Game 1 against Orlando. And he should be somewhat rejuvenated in this series now that he doesn't have to deal with the LeBron Experience. Beware, Vince Carter.
Ray Allen: No, as the song goes, he's not as good as he once was, and there's a long history of shooting guards in Allen's losing their skills rapidly when they were in Sugar Ray's current age bracket. (Mitch Richmond famously went from averaging roughly 16 points per game to the side of a milk carton in the matter of a year.) While Allen may not be a Reggie Miller-type exception to this rule, there are logical reasons to think he can continue to play at his current high level for a few more years. He's in tremendous shape. He's methodical-to-the-point-of-obsession about preparation and routine. He's still one of the most efficient scorers in NBA history if you look at his 3-point and free-throw percentages, and two of his three best shooting percentages have come the past two seasons. And in a totally in-the-moment sense, is there anyone else in Celtics history -- save for No. 33 -- who you'd want on the line with the outcome in the balance, as it was in the final seconds Sunday? It's probably too early for such chatter, but I hope they re-sign him.
Rajon Rondo: We heard about chemistry issues from time to time with this team this season, and it seemed the general consensus was that they were related to Sheed and his antics. But my suspicion -- one which Garnett came close to confirming the other day -- is that some of the issues stemmed from the fact that Rondo emerged as the team's best (or at least most indispensable) player this season, and some of the veterans weren't quite prepared for that transition, particularly since Rondo has hardly been the deferential or humble sort when it comes to expressing faith in his own skills. Fortunately, the egos were sorted out and checked at the postseason's door, with everyone sharing the common goal. And it certainly does not hurt that Rondo has as much substance as flash -- not only does he make the spectacular plays, but much more often than not, he makes the right plays. He is a true point guard, a floor general in full, and those who might have resented his cockiness are wise enough to realize that their team's fortunes couldn't be in better hands.
Tony Allen: He's become what Marquis Daniels was supposed to be, and yes, that is a lot. He's their best perimeter defender (especially now that he's learned to resist upfakes that have too often resulted in three free throws for a smirking opponent). He's developed a rapport with Rondo on the break. He's proving that the athletic force who was blossoming offensively in 2006-07 before a foolish knee injury is not gone for good and was not the product of a wretched team. He's playing within himself and resisting the temptation to overdribble, yet generating more breathtaking feats than any player other than Rondo. I did not believe he had this in him. Then again, I'd have said the same about his team just a couple of weeks ago. december

Fox's upfront review: Confident, familiar, plus dinos

New theater, familiar script. Fox stuck to an upfront formula that's served the network well in recent years while hosting ad buyers in a new venue, the Beacon Theatre. Overall, strong trailers, plus getting the Super Bowl next year, helped bolster the impression that the #1 network the past six years shouldn't have much of problem staying in the top spot.
Fox opens with the parade of actors, capped by "House" star Hugh Laurie making a pitch to advertisers -- a move the network has employed in recent years, though previously with Kiefer Sutherland holding the microphone. The stars were followed by a lengthy discourse from ad sales chief Jon Nesvig. The point -- made many different ways -- is that broadcast as a whole is doing well.
"I'm reminded of Yogi Berra's line -- 'nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded,'" he said about chatter prognosticating the downfall of broadcast.
Fox spent an usually large amount of time on this point, even citing competitors such as CBS' "Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family." What seems magnanimous on the surface is actually quite effective for Fox specifically -- when you're top-rated network, any praise of broadcast reflects positively on your business above all others.
The number of slides focusing on numbers made Fox's upfront the opposite of fourth-place NBC's, whose presentation notably avoided all things mathematical (No, I didn't attend NBC's upfront ... more on that later ... maybe ... haven't decided yet).
An attempt to paint ultra-expensive Super Bowl ad spots as "one of the best bargains in advertising," however, was met with laughter from the Madison Avenue crowd.
Next, Fox entertainment chairman Peter Rice took the stage. Rice, pacing rather hypnotically, continued the case for broadcast in general and Fox in particular.
"Our programs are not only massive hits, they're the most searched about and the most talked about," Rice said, sounding for a moment a bit like The CW's Dawn Ostroff. "There are very few places where you can truly impact culture."
"Glee" co-star Jane Lynch then took the stage to introduce Reilly, saying the entertainment president has been "been coasting on those shiny local weatherman looks ... and dear god, how many times does he bleach his teeth?"
Reilly spent some time on the network's summer lineup (which is a pretty optional move, though, again, reflects Fox's dominance), then launched into the trailers. Clips from most are here, but briefly: "Lonestar" looked extremely well-produced and emotionally compelling, though you have to wonder how this narrative will work as a weekly series (two colleagues afterward both agreed that the lead was "cute," though one couldn't stomach rooting for any main character who's cheating on two wives). "Ride-Along" was tough to judge from the trailer ... unsure how to elaborate, I was just left without an opinion. "Raising Hope" -- young loser raises a baby -- seemed like a premise that was going to go south, but the crowd thought the jokes were funny. You can see why pilot buzz was mixed on "Running Wilde," it struggled for laughs, as did "Bob's Burgers." And there's also a show called "Mixed Signals" that made me not want to get married or be single.
Then there was "Terra Nova."
I'm predisposed to like this drama; it's my kind of show. And there's only concept art and talking heads right now. So keep all that in mind when I say I was jazzed by the concept art and bits of detail dropped during the show's promo feature (centipedes five feet long, Steven Spielberg promised). The show will feature new-looking dinos, since we've apparently learned more in the past 15 years that allows Hollywood to create more freaky-looking dinosaur designs and justify it.
"It's a wonderful conceptual delicious banquet for audience," enthused Spielberg.
Now that man knows how to sell to advertisers! That phrase means nothing yet sounds fantastic.
The show will launch "opportunisticaly" sometime midseason (read: after "American Idol").
The show wrapped with the cast of "Glee performing "Like a Prayer," effective for hitting some emotional buttons to drive home the network's array of talking points. All in all, a professionally executed upfront, and pretty much what you expected. nike and addias

What Are the Advantages of Business Credit Cards?

Easier to obtain than lines of credit, these cards can help the small business owner conserve cash while still buying the equipment and supplies needed to keep the business moving forward. Surveys report that more than 65 percent of small businesses now have credit cards, and this number continues to rise. Of course, not unlike personal credit cards, the same warnings hold true: Business credit cards must be used cautiously and only for the sake of the business. Although business credit cards typically carry an annual fee, it is usually rather nominal. A number of advantages are evident in such business credit cards, including: Another advantage of a business credit card is that by using it, you are demonstrating the growth of business while promoting it at the same time. Even someone running a home-based business gains more credibility when flashing a business credit card.

Integrated Communications System Based on Satellite Broadband Network

The main focus of this paper is the integrated communications system whose client runs on Ultra-Mobile Personal Computer and network based on Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) which provided by the Mobile Satellite Company. The first step is analyzing the current situation of domestic and international satellite communication technology, describing the characteristics of satellite broadband network. The second step is providing the design proposal of the integrated communications system. This system is a Windows destop application which based on Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 as a development platform and using Visual C++ to develop. The system uses Windows Sockets Application Programming Interface (WinSock API) to build a communication and control platform between Client and Server. The main functions of the system are Satellite Terminal Control, Voice Calls and Remote Whiteboard. In the end of this paper, the entire subject of study is summarized, and the future direction of the satellite communications sytem is outlined. After the preliminary test, the system has basically met the needs of users and achieved the desired results.

Antarctica and Environment

Antarctica has actually become a kind of space station – a unique observation post for detecting important changes in the world’s environment. Remote from major sources of pollution and the complex geological and ecological systems that prevail elsewhere, Antarctica makes possible scientific measurements that are often sharper and easier to interpret than those made in other parts of the world.
Growing numbers of scientists therefore see Antarctica as a distant-early-warning sensor, where potentially dangerous global trends may be spotted before they show up to the north. One promising field of investigation is glaciology. Scholars from the United States, Switzerland, and France are pursuing seven separate but related projects that reflect their concern for the health of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet – a concern they believe the world at large should share.
The Transantarctic Mountain, some of them more than 14,000 feet high, divide the continent into two very different regions. The part of the continent to the “east” of the mountains is a high plateau covered by an ice sheet nearly two miles thick. “West” of the mountain, the half of the continent south of the Americas is also covered by an ice sheet, but there the ice rests on rock that is mostly well below sea level. If the West Antarctic Ice Sheet disappeared, the western part of the continent would be reduced to a sparse cluster of island.
While ice and snow are obviously central to many environmental experiments, others focus on the mysterious “dry valley” of Antarctica, valleys that contain little ice or snow even in the depths of winter. Slashed through the mountains of southern Victoria Land, these valleys once held enormous glaciers that descended 9,000 feet from the polar plateau to the Ross Sea. Now the glaciers are gone, perhaps a casualty of the global warming trend during the 10,000 years since the ice age. Even the snow that falls in the dry valleys is blasted out by vicious winds that roars down from the polar plateau to the sea. Left bare are spectacular gorges, rippled fields of sand dunes, clusters of boulders sculptured into fantastic shapes by 100-mile-an-hour winds, and an aura of extraterrestrial desolation.
Despite the unearthly aspect of the dry valleys, some scientists believe they may carry a message of hope of the verdant parts of the earth. Some scientists believe that in some cases the dry valleys may soak up pollutants faster than pollutants enter them.

Being a Little Princess

A Little Princess is a touching novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett—a famous novelist and dramatist. It obviously contains lots of fancied plots, but the parts of creating miracles the book talks about, can really reach the bottom of my heart. The book can bring me into a world that is more than reality when I read it. I can feel the power of goodness from the heroine—Sara Crewe. The book A Little Princess is the story of a girl named Sara Crewe, who is given everything she could ever want, but she is not spoiled. She immediately becomes a favorite of other students when they find that she is clever and can tell good stories by using her vivid imagination. On Sara's 11th birthday, Miss Minchin is told that Sara's father has died, leaving Sara penniless, and nowhere to go. So Miss Minchin sends her to an attic where she is going to work as a servant. Sara's trial is to remember that a Princess is the princess all the time, even when she acts as others, and even in rags and tatters. At last she gets helps from the friends of her father and become rich again, and become a princess forever. We can feel goodness all through the book. Sara is kind to everyone, even to the mice and her dolls! She always is ready to help others not matter what situation she herself is in. She encourages her friends when they have problems; she helps her friends to study; she tells wonderful stories to the poor little servant, and buys delicious food for her; she forgives the students who hate her and gives them a warm hand when they have problems; and even when she becomes poor she still gives most of her bread to a beggar; she and the mice become friends. Though she is starving she won’t forget to give some food to them. You might think this is hard for other people, but Sara did it very well. Her goodness and her headmaster’s villainy become an obvious contrast. The book has great influence on me. When I have difficulties, I always think of Sara and I will have courage to solve the difficulties and sometimes some ideas will come to my mind as if Sara had helped me. What does the word “goodness” mean? The explanation in the dictionary is: the state or quality of being good. What Sara has done not only represents goodness, but also shows that the author upholds good things and hopes that the world will be full of goodness and love. And then what about the real life in the world? Of course there is goodness and villainy. Goodness? Good things are done by historic persons and great people; as a negligible person, it has nothing to do with me! If you have this kind of opinion of doing goodness, you are totally wrong. We can see goodness from very tiny things, such as: giving a sweet smile to your friends when you meet them; being kind and considerate while you do things; trying to find it’s a pleasure to help others; being kind to all creatures…well, as there are so many, it sounds difficult; but if you really have a warm heart in daily life, you will find it is easy enough to do goodness. Sara sets us a good example. She not only herself does it perfectly, but also spreads the idea of goodness to her friends and impresses many people deeply. Through the book we can find that actually, the author describes Sara and Miss Minchin as two extremely pole, one is extremely good; the other is extremely bad. Though people in real life are not that extremely different. However, we still can find that, nowadays, fewer people want to do goodness and can do it very well. Why? There are a number of reasons accounting for the significant phenomenon. First of all, nowadays, our society carries out the so-called one- child- policy, in the consideration of their children, many parents always teach the children that protect yourself first, consequently, day after day, children become somewhat selfish that leads to the fact that fewer people can do goodness as Sara does. Urbanization also plays an important part. As the country approaches urbanization, and living standard improves, more people who live in big cities and have more living pressure, are busy for their own work and study, and then correspondingly care less about public society, they just care more about the things related to their life, such as incomes and holidays, etc. They are not in the lack of sympathy but have no concept of doing goodness. In their minds doing goodness is worth nothing. As we have mentioned above, people have sympathy but have no awareness. If they concerned about more things except those related to themselves, they will notice doing goodness is also good for them, and for the society they live in. As we know, the world is complicate, and full of sensation, which we cannot accept at once, that makes us difficult to make people be aware of this point. And this can explain why people in the past with less living pressure, are likely to show their goodness. The popularity of A Little Princess not only attributes to Sara’s goodness but also to the awareness of goodness we have while we read the book. Wish Sara will be the princess in our heart forever; Wish more and more people to be the little princess Sara in reality

Be Bravery—Success Is Not Far Away!

Have you ever been alone for a long time? Can you stay on a solitary island for almost 30 years? Do you know how to make clothes with animals’ furs and build a house by yourself? The answers to these questions are obvious—No, we can’t, at least most of us can’t. But one person can do those things. Who is he? He is Robinson Crusoe. Actually, Robinson Crusoe is not a person in reality. He is just a man created by Daniel Defoe, a prestigious writer in England who used to be a spy and a reporter. Robinson was a young man who hated the monotonous life in England and wanted to become a sailor. Despite of the prevention of his father, he decided to travel around the world by ship. Robison is a brave explorer, wonderful sailor, and a clever man. With his strong (tenacious) willpower and determination, his dream became true. He had the courage to fight with the bad environment, and worked hard. Robison challenged himself to adversity and did something special. Robinson was called a brave explorer, because he had a lot of amazing experiences, and never was afraid of the wild animals and people. Robinson was also a wonderful sailor for he was the only one who survived. Simultaneously,he was also a clever man: He made a house with a strong fence just using the ship’s sails, ropes, and pieces of wood. In the evening, there was no light. But Robinson was a man full of ideas; he found out that the fat of dead animals can be used to make light. From then on, the island was in light. Some time later, maybe about 23 years later, Robison saved a wild man, the man was so grateful to him. Robison called the man “man Friday” and they went back to England together. The psychologist said “The desire to suffer and conquer danger is human nature”, but what supported Robinson to live in the solitary island for 27 years? Well, as I see it, it is mainly due to his courage. This book tells me that only if we persevered unremittingly, and were not afraid of any problem, could we overcome all the difficulties and be a successful man who laughs to the end.And right after I had finished reading, this book influenced me a lot. I still remember the first time when I took part in “New concept English reciting competition”. I used to believe that all the contestants are elite, and they all are the brightest students. I just think I am so negligible that no one will notice me. Time passed quickly, the day of quarter final came. I had hesitated for a long time. Should I enter the competition? Or, should I wait for another chance? Just as I was shilly-shally, I came across a book by chance. And I also came across a comment about the book The life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, which influenced me a lot in my later study and life. I like this story very much and like Robinson’s bravery, cleverness, especially his great courage, so I read the comment on the book carefully, think entirely and critically and really learn a lot from this book and its hero. Up to now, I still could remember some of the famous words. And I do realize that I should be a person like Robinson - a man who has tenacious willpower and courage, who is brave enough to challenge everything. Well, I think you all know the result without my telling you. I entered the contest, and won the third prize. The fact proves everything. You just should need to be brave, just like me, especially like Robinson, and I think then it is just you not others that will be the last winner. Trust me! Robinson and his great courage and bravery will always be with us. Come on, guys! Be yourself and advance bravely. Success is not far away with you
